The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), observed annually on Decembember 3rd, champions the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities worldwide. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1992, this day raises awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities and highlights the need for inclusivity and equality across all aspects of life. The theme for 2024, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” emphasizes the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities to lead and contribute meaningfully to society. Celebrations often include community events, disability awareness training, and initiatives that foster a more inclusive world.
In alignment with the spirit of IDPD, the National Service Scheme (NSS) of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) organized an impactful outreach program titled “AccessAbility: Empowering Lives with Supportive Devices for People with Physical Disabilities” on January 8, 2025. The event, held at the Samudhaya Nala Koodam, Otteri Vandalur Village Panchayat, exemplified SRMIST’s commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities and promoting social equality.
The program was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Dr. D. Kingsly Jeba Singh, Dean of Mechanical Engineering at SRMIST, and Dr. K. Suresh Kumar, Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Raghavendra Rao, and Dr. V. G. Umasekar, all from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. K Maheswari , NSS Programme officer, Faculty of Management delivered vote of Thanks. Their coordinated efforts ensured the program’s success, reflecting SRMIST’s ongoing endeavor to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.

The “AccessAbility” program showcased the significance of providing people with physical disabilities access to supportive devices and technologies designed to improve mobility, independence, and overall well-being. Through hands-on demonstrations and awareness initiatives, participants were introduced to assistive devices tailored to meet their unique needs, fostering empowerment and a sense of community.
This initiative is part of SRMIST’s broader strategy to create an inclusive society through innovation, empathy, and practical solutions to societal challenges. By fostering an environment of care and support, SRMIST continues to lead by example, proving that education and research can drive positive social change.
