Chennai: Demonstrating the power of youth-led social action, students from the Master of Social Work (Self-Financing) program at Madras School of Social Work, under the guidance of Prof. R. Ramachandran and in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Traffic Police, spearheaded a four-day traffic awareness campaign that left a lasting mark across the city.

Over the course of the campaign, it is estimated that nearly 1,200 members of the public directly witnessed and engaged with the students’ efforts, underscoring the wide reach and influence of the initiative.
The campaign began at the Vepery–Purasawalkam junction, where enthusiastic student volunteers held placards with strong road safety messages and rewarded responsible commuters with chocolates. Their innovative approach turned everyday traffic stops into moments of learning, appreciation, and reflection.

On Day 2, the movement gathered momentum at Anna Nagar Roundtana, where students performed thought-provoking street plays on drunk driving, triple riding, and rash driving. The skits not only drew the attention of passersby but also ignited meaningful discussions, proving that awareness can be spread through creativity and empathy.

The initiative continued on Day 3 at the G1 Vepery Police Station signal, with a focus on helmet usage. Through slogans and placards, students inspired commuters to adopt safe practices immediately, with many adjusting their helmets on the spot—a clear sign of direct behavioral change.
The concluding day at the Anna Nagar Blue Star signal saw another set of powerful skits, this time addressing catcalling, mobile phone usage while driving, and other unsafe behaviors. Once again, chocolates were given to those following the rules, reinforcing the spirit of positive encouragement. Public participation in chanting slogans alongside the students created a sense of collective responsibility and unity.

This campaign highlighted more than just the importance of road rules—it showcased the energy, dedication, and leadership of young social work students determined to bring change to their community. By blending creativity with civic responsibility, they transformed some of Chennai’s busiest junctions into vibrant platforms for awareness, solidarity, and action.
